Just two years old, he migrated with his siblings to the United States, settling in the vibrant city of New York. Growing up in a multicultural environment, Rizwan’s life was infused with the sounds of diverse musical traditions, but his true passion for music was rooted in his family’s heritage—a legacy dating back over 450 years.

His father was a master of many string instruments, renowned as the greatest Dilruba performer—a traditional Indian string instrument known for its soulful sound and deep connection to classical music. Rizwan’s uncles were equally talented, having mastered instruments like the Rubab, Sitar, Tabla, and Harmonium, each contributing to a family lineage steeped in musical excellence. From a young age, Rizwan displayed extraordinary musical gifts, not only in his ability to perform but also in his innate curiosity about the essence and philosophy of music itself.

Despite limited support from his family in America regarding his musical pursuits, Rizwan’s dedication never waned. His desire to understand music’s deeper meaning drove him to explore beyond mere performance. At the age of five, he began playing the Tabla—a traditional Indian percussion instrument consisting of two drums, the Bayan and the Dayan, which produce intricate rhythmic patterns vital to classical Indian music. Originating over 3,000 years ago in the Indian subcontinent, the Tabla is renowned for its rich tonal qualities and complex rhythms, serving as the heartbeat of many musical compositions. Rizwan’s early fascination with the Tabla was a testament to his deep connection with his cultural roots and his relentless pursuit of musical mastery.

By the age of 10, Rizwan Bedar had already mastered the Tabla, showcasing his extraordinary talent and dedication. He performed alongside some of the most renowned Afghan musicians, including Ustad zalan , Ustad Tarana Saaz, and Ustad Kheeyal, immersing himself in the rich traditions of Afghan and Indian classical music. These collaborations not only honed his technical skills but also deepened his understanding of the cultural and emotional depth of music.

At around age 13, Rizwan made a pivotal decision to further his musical education by joining the prestigious Ustad Brishna School of Music. Established as a renowned institution dedicated to preserving and teaching traditional Afghan, Indian, and Persian musical arts, the school is celebrated for its rigorous training and its role in nurturing generations of master musicians. Founded by the legendary Ustad Brishna, a revered maestro known for his mastery of classical and folk traditions, the school emphasizes discipline, deep theoretical knowledge, and soulful performance. Rizwan’s enrollment in this esteemed institution marked a significant step in his journey, allowing him to refine his craft under the guidance of some of the most talented and knowledgeable mentors in the region, and solidifying his place as a future musical luminary.

At age 16 Rizwan Bedar moved to Sacramento California, he was already making a name for himself as a talented vocalist, performing at various events and gatherings, captivating audiences with his soulful voice and deep musical understanding. Alongside his vocal pursuits, he had also taken it upon himself to master the Rubab—a legendary Afghan string instrument often regarded as the "lion of instruments" due to its rich, warm sound and deep cultural significance.

The Rubab is a traditional lute-like instrument with a carved wooden body, a short neck, and strings made from gut or nylon. Its distinctive sound is characterized by a haunting, melodious tone that evokes deep emotional expression, often used in Afghan classical and folk music. Learning to play the Rubab requires not only technical skill but also an intuitive sense of rhythm and melody, as the instrument's tuning and fingerings are complex. It demands years of dedicated practice to master its nuanced fingerings, intricate plucking techniques, and the ability to improvise within traditional frameworks.

Despite the challenge, Rizwan's self-taught journey with the Rubab showcased his perseverance and passion for deepening his musical versatility. His curiosity also extended to mastering the Harmonium, keyboard, and piano—each offering a different musical dimension. The Harmonium, a pump-organ with a rich, resonant sound, became a tool for him to explore harmony and accompaniment, while the keyboard and piano opened new avenues for composition and performance, blending Western and Eastern musical traditions.

Today, Rizwan Bedar is celebrated as one of the most versatile and eloquent musicians of all time.
